Why Is Everyone Drinking? (Who Cares!)

Why Is Everyone Drinking? (Who Cares!)

Well bust out the bagpipes and corned beef, cuz it’s that time of year again!  St. Patrick’s Day is here!  I really get a kick out of this holiday each year because it seems to be celebrated by EVERYONE, even though no one can really explain what they’re celebrating.  Don’t get me wrong…I have nothing against ‘drinking-for-drinking-sake’, but this day takes it to a new level.

First, the facts:

St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

So…..now that we have that out of the way, pass the green beer!  Honestly, there’s gotta be an awful lot of dots to connect to get from a guy dying 1500 years ago on another continent, to me suckin’ down a green Coors Lt. at my neighborhood Chili’s.  In truth, I get excited for this day each year – and you can bet your pot o’ gold that I’ll be proudly wearing my green shirt and cutting out of work a few minutes early to tilt back a pint at my local celebration.   Hopefully you’ll be doing the same.

So whether you’re spending the night with the fam, or painting the town green with friends, I thought I’d help you pass the hours ’til quitting time with some helpful ‘St. Paddy’s Day’ links and info:  (click on the titles to navigate to the pages)

RECIPE FOR GREEN BEER:

  • Glass…beer…food coloring.  (Wow! I would have NEVER figured that out!  Thanks Internet.)

ST. PATRICK’S DAY GAMES, ETC. FOR KIDDOS

  • Printable mazes, coloring pages, fun facts, etc.  Family fun at it’s best!

WIKI ST. PADDY’S DAY:

  • Just in case anyone actually wants to know why it is their raising a toast with complete strangers.  (Crazy.  I know.)

IRISH TOASTS

  • Whatever you decide to fill your glass with – whether it’s green beer or green milk – make sure to say an Irish Toast!

With that, I will wrap up our little shout-out to St. Patrick.  We wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday – and hope you get to spend it doing whatever makes you happy.  And if you feel like sharing…go ahead and tell us…

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY?

Cheers!
Matt

Usually I love the green beer and partying with friends! I am super bummed that TC has to work tonight! And Em was queen cranky pants so I put her to sleep early. At least I got to play a leprechaun trick on my students and wear green! Happy St. Pats:)
