Oh My Aching…..Teeth?

Oh My Aching…..Teeth?

Cameron and Ellie have a dentist appointment tomorrow.  Why is that ‘blog-worthy’ you ask?  Well, it isn’t exactly the fact they have appointments – rather it’s how they feel about going to their appointments.  Still confused?  Let me explain.

You see, Cameron is actually EXCITED to go to the dentist!  Huh?  What’s that you say?  I know.  I couldn’t believe it myself when I heard the words come out of his mouth.  I even tried to discourage him a little and tell him that “they are going to poke around at your teeth and stuff” to which he responded “I know – that will be so cool!”.  Looks like we might as well schedule a trip to the ‘head-doctor’ after the dentist…because I’m pretty sure Cameron ain’t all there.

Ellie on the other hand wasn’t quite as excited as her brother, but still managed to show a little excitement at the fact she’s going to go to the dentist.  Perhaps it’s the fact they haven’t had any horror-stories yet?  Perhaps they need to have one of those probing tools slip off the tooth and jab them in the gums?  Or perhaps they just are one paper plate short of a picnic.

Whatever the reason may be, you can rest assured they didn’t get their love of dentistry and mouth-torture from me.  I had a hard time even making that image above – and in fact, my teeth seem to be hurting the more I think about it.  Only recently have I started to ease myself back into the torture chamber dental chair, and while I’ve absolutely LOVED the bleeding gums and headaches that accompany my visits, it has made me long for my years of not going.  That’s right…there was a period of time where I didn’t subject myself to the torture for over 10 years!  But then I had to go making resolutions about ‘being responsible’ and ‘leading by example’.  Stupid me.

Ugh…I must end this now.  My teeth hurt just thinking about the dentist…and my brain hurts just trying to understand how my son can be excited for his visit.  Maybe he’ll have to get the fluoride tomorrow!  That will teach him!!

So…..are you a ‘responsible adult’?  DO YOU GO TO THE DENTIST TWICE A YEAR??

  1. I used to be that responsible…now it seems like I make it once a year…or maybe once every year and a half…

As for the horror stories that the kids don’t have yet…need I remind you of Ellie’s fall from grace at McDonalds that resulted in the removal of her top two teeth at three years old? Just because you weren’t at McDonalds or the emergency dentist didn’t mean it didn’t happen. :) Even I was traumatized by this. I wonder if Ellie remembers the “princess nose” that pumped laughing gas into her so that they were able to pull those two tiny teeth out. I’m gonna cry all over again.

My dad used to be terrified of the dentist, and reading yoru post I find it interesting that you have some similar feelings. My dad was a much bigger baby about it, but he didn’t take 10 years to make it to the dentist! :)

I’ll update you on their enjoyment level AFTER the visit tomorrow. Wish us luck!

I do remember Ellie’s teeth incident (vividly :( )…which is why I found it strange that even SHE was a little excited about going!! Crazy kids.

And ‘yes’…I am pretty proud of that 10 years!

Me I go often! well at least twice a year… Now we need to work on Mom she has a really hard time with the “D” word!

I do not like the dentist! Not sure why I felt this way in the past, never had many cavities, a couple sensitive teeth which I hate…but a couple years ago I had the all time worst experience. Those little cardboard things they put way back in your mouth? Well one slipped down my throat – which forced the dentist to try and get it out – which made me throw up all over. AND the dentist finished with my appointment. I then drove home and got in the shower, clothes, shoes and all. There beat that one! I have promised Rusty I will go this year as it has now been 2 years. We’ll see if I am responsible, and smart, and go. I wish Cameron and Ellie only good experiences.

Oh my goodness…that has to be one of the grossest stories I have read in a long time. I should let Cameron read that BEFORE he goes today!! (just kidding)

Really though…that is not good mom. I think I may start another streak after reading that!

So even though Jen is the one who witnessed it first-hand…I’ll go ahead and let you know that the kiddos did GREAT!! They obviously have their Daddy’s teeth as they both are proud members of the ‘no-cavity-club!’

Also, I might have been excited as a kid if the dentist were as awesome as it is today. The kiddos dentist office was a giant jungle…and there was a huge tree in the middle of the cleaning room with monkeys hanging on the ceilings, etc. Quite a difference from my experience at Dr. King’s amazing office: bland white with bland creme accents – Reader’s Digests – and muzak pumpin’ over the hi-fi.

Yes, things have changed since you were a little one. Glad they did great.

  6. If you want to see how much the dentist has changed since we were little, you can look at pictures of it on the web. It is truly amazing, and the kids had a BLAST. I sure wish the dentist was like that when I was little…maybe I would have had fewer cavities (or at least had more fun getting them filled)! :)
