- “Kids – come here and see this weird bug!” That was all I needed to hear in order to drop what I was doing and run over to take a peek at what Jen had stumbled upon. Lo and behold, it was a praying mantis. I seriously think these bugs are from another planet – just look at that head!! Anyway, I was able to get my camera in time to snap a dozen or so pictures of this camoflagued little guy before we set him on his merry way.
- Oddly enough, this is only the second time in my life I have seen a praying mantis – and the first time was EXTREMELY memorable. My family and I were eating dinner at the Lodge in Michigan when who should join our table but a huge praying mantis?!?! Throughout the meal I believe it made a number of appearances (including once on someone’s head!)…and by the end of the meal, my step mom was chasing me around the local golf course with it on her finger. Strange? Indeed. Unforgettable? Of course.

I used to catch them and keep them for a day in a jar with holes punched in the lid. For some reason there were lots of these in Illinois. Great pic.
